Yes, I am that person that had a question and wasn’t afraid to ask. And many times I got thanked by others for being bold enough to ask. So I thought I would share occasionally questions that I get asked frequently and hope that some of you find the answers helpful.
Will you always have that is often a question someone asks when they are leaving behind a “basic” in lieu of a more novelty style when they are shopping. The answer really is situational, since each of our wardrobes are different. If you have a great collection of basics then maybe the more unique piece makes sense for you. my general advice is to always go for the style that you know you will wear. . As to the will you always have this. The answer is no. Like a grocer doesn’t have peaches in October, there is always some seasonality to clothing and once somethings are sold out, they are not available to get again.
Some basic styles are not offered all year round and sometimes even with the best planning by retailers and brands sometimes things sell out. . So, if you really like something and are always frustrated that it’s in the wash, or you find a pant that actually fits you perfectly & you would like to wear daily, it’s worth considering adding a back up. Especially for those enjoying having a more minimalist wardrobe. You don’t have to wear exactly the same thing, but think about what you don’t want to run out of.
Check out our Top Selling Styles here & our Customer Favourited Styles here.
The more we can all plan a little in advance the better the wardrobe and sometimes trying something new that is available also can lead to a new favourite. You might have a lot of clothing, but what do you actually wear. Let’s start there.
Stores will come and go, brands will come and go, styles will come and go, but the concept of buying long lasting, timeless, well made clothing that suits you is here to stay.
And for those who like the nitty gritty. Ideal shopping time for Spring/Summer on the clothing calendar is Mid March- mid May and for Fall/Winter is mid August -mid October. Not that there aren’t options outside these times - but that’s when there is the best selection.

I just heard this week that we will not be getting our Spring 2024 order from Thought Clothing. It's a disappointment since we had such beautiful things ordered that you would have loved.
In a market that's oversaturated with fast fashion, it was nice to see a brand like Thought Clothing delivering beautifully designed clothing that was both ethically made and made with sustainable fibres. Here's a link to what we have in stock from Thought Clothing, but I wanted to call out some of our top selling basics that we have sourced from Thought Clothing and encourage you to have a look at them, while we still have some in stock.
based on the kinds of questions I get regularly, I don't think it's well known that clothing is ordered about a year in advance and when a brand decides to stop selling through retail stores or goes out of business, we don't generally get much notice, so it's difficult, if not almost impossible to replace styles we were planning on. So that's why I want you to have a look at these now - just in case they could fill a need in your wardrobe.
The POSIE cardigan pictured here and above is a 100% Organic Cotton cardigan that's very flattering and easy to wear. We styled it closed on Stefanie to show that it can be worn as a sweater on it's own, but also takes a layer well under it and here on Jean we were showing that it made a great layer under other things as well. She's also wearing one of our best selling t-shirts, also a Thought classic style that's 100% Organic Cotton and available in long sleeve and short sleeve options.
GOTS Certified, Fair Trade Organic Cotton Long Sleeve T-shirt
Our Best Selling style from all the basics that we have stocked from Thought Clothing is the Dashka Trousers and they are great as a travel pant, a casual pant and even dresses up nicely too when needed.
Shown here in a seasonal pattern and below in classic black
And, so many people really love the Thought Socks as well, so have a look at your supply and see if you could use a solid black basic or something fun like this.

Do you know when you like something so much, you're a little sad when it's in the laundry? For some of us who favour the uniform approach to dressing, sometimes considering a 2nd of something or something similar is a great options. This week's feature is on styles that our customers like enough that they buy a second. And I hope when you review this, you will see that having some similar favourites doesn't need to be boring.
Here's the link the Instagram Live, if you would like my commentary and to see the items on camera.
A list of styles that people enjoy on repeat, starting with t-shirts/tops:
Annie - pictured above in one of the five patterns with organic cotton jeans and in one of the two solid options with the St James pants that also made this list
People seem to really like the Annie because it's soft 100% cotton that's comfortable and easy to wear. It's a t-shirt that's looks like a blouse, but in an easier care format.
Jilaana- pictured above in one of the two stripes with the super comfortable organic cotton/recycled cotton jeans and in one of the three solid colours with another customer favourited pant, the cropped cargo pant also available in a full length option
Jilaana is a short sleeve shirt that many wear year round. It's a blend of organic cotton and tencel and light, breathable and dressy enough to wear with a blazer to the office and nice enough, that if you remove your blazer, you still look very stylish.
Cassie is a fun 100% fair trade cotton option, with a little more novelty than many of our top sellers. It's available in different options seasonally and has lots of great details
GOTS Certified Organic Cotton T-Shirt long sleeve & short sleeve it's a really nice slub knit that's really comfortable and stylish on it's own, but a really great layering piece and like it's style name it's 100% GOTS certified, fair trade organic cotton & it's been discontinued from the brand, so if you could use a basic, give it a consideration while we have in stock
Essential Bamboo T-shirt long sleeve and short sleeve is made in Toronto from Bamboo and it has a nice soft hand and somewhat flowy fit
Sweaters are next and the one pictured above is an updated version of our best selling item from last year...and it's styled very casually in the picture, but many wear it with a pair of trousers for a great work look as well.
Merinaa - pictured above is 100% organic cotton and a nice weight on it's own, but also nice with a layer under it or over it too.
Lulu Cardigan - a 100% Organic Cotton button front cardigan in lots of colours
Posie Cardigan - a 100% Organic Cotton Cardigan with a v-neck, pictured below, with the GOTS Certified T-Shirt
Laarni Sweater - what I like to call an over/under. A style that's great on it's own, but also works well as a layer over a top and also looks great under a top too and it's a super soft blend of Organic Cotton and Tencel
Customer favourited pant options:
*See the post below for more on the pants since they are all good options
Magdaa pictured below with the Cotton Stretch Blazer, which is also a style people would happily have as part of their "uniform"
And one style you have seen and will see me wearing and it's a really great example of a layer for under or over basics as well. It's a very soft and comfortable 100% Organic Cotton and almost like a lightweight sweater weight.
The Jaanisa is show here with the Kaathia Turtleneck and a Denim Jacket and all can be worn together.

This week's edition focuses on pants. It sems like this is something many of us need for our day to day lives and sometimes an update can help you make so many more outfits more comfortable and stylish. Here's the link to the Instagram Live review of pants if you prefer to watch it
Here are the links to pants that seem to be working for many of our customers and we'd love you to consider if you could use some pants.
1. Belle Wide Leg Trouser is our dressiest option. It's great if your office is a little more formal or you're looking for a comfortable pant that can also double as a dress pant. I paired for the IG Live with a new top from White Stuff with a little sparkle, thinking this would be nice for a special occasion and also since it's a cropped pant, an intentional sock is a great idea, especially if you're going to be removing your shoes or boots.
Style Tip for cropped pants:
Style Tip for wide leg pants:
Outfit pictured with the Kilburn pant: Lightweight Sweater, Scarf, Blazer
Outfit pictures in the IGLIVE with the Kilburn: Lightweight Sweater, Organic Cotton ShirtJac , Socks
2. Kilburn Pant
The Kilburn pant and well as the other styles from FIG Clothing, are an exception to our natural fibre criteria. They have some Nylon in them that seems to make them last forever, as many of our customers will attest, having owned a pair or more in this fabric over the years. (see what people have to say about the SOZ here) They wear and wash really well, keep their shape and keep their colour.
The Kilburn is a really easy to wear pull on cropped wider leg pant and it seems to suit a lot of people & is really easy to dress up or down as desired and isn't as wide as some, so easier to also pair with all your everyday top options.
Pictured above with the Himaari: Bamboo Blazer and our two best selling tops, the Jilaana and the Annie
With the Himaari on the IG LIve, for a dressier option
3. Himaari
This is the widest of the pant options and make a really great comfortable dress pant. It is wider through the hips and legs and may need to be hemmed, but it's a very classic pant that would be a great wardrobe addition for years to come and it's in the same great fabric as one of our top selling pants:
4. the Madgaa
Outfit above : Magdaa pants and Cozy Sweater
Outfit from the IG Live with these pants: Annie & Posie
Pictured above with a wrap top, tucked in
Pictured on the IG Live with a tunic length shirt
5. St James
This is one of the pants that suits almost everyone who tries it. It looks like a dress pant, but it's very soft and stretchy and definitely built to last. It has functional belt loops should you want to add a belt, but they are very low profile and I would expect most people will not feel the need to add one. If you needed one pant - for work, dress up and play - this might be the one!
6. The Jodhpur
This one is like a dress legging with pockets or a dressy jogger that you likely will wear for yoga, walking the dog and dressing up to go out....it's very comfortable with a wide soft waist. We like it with a cozy sweater like shown above & it works with a blouse and/or blazer too. But we recommend this one for casual, with the occasional dress up if needed.
7. OTH Pant
This is the jogger we recommend as a work pant ....and a comfortable and stylish one. Of course it's great for those not heading to school or office as well, but it's a jogger that lends itself to looking professional. It has a structure and a soft, comfortable waistband and side pockets.
Style tip: to dress up a jogger style pant, wear a short boot that hits at the cuff and this instantly makes it look dressier than if you wear wiith a sneaker. Also, you can elevate it by making sure your top is tailored. It also does go well with casual options too, of course.
8. Dashka seasonal print and Dashka Solid
We have had this style for a while and it's popular year round for lounge, yoga and travel and does come in solid navy and solid black as well as the print pictured above. We dressed it up with a blazer here to show that you can....and if your blazer is the soft and comfortable, you might want to. And, for anyone looking for maternity pants - we have had quite a few customers wear these really comfortably throughout their pregnancy and also it's a comfortable postpartum option too.
9. Straight Leg Cargo Pant & Straight Leg Pant
We haven't photographed these pants on any of our community models yet, but they are the go to work pant for a lot of people, especially when paired with the matching blazer. They are a full length, classic style with a straight leg, so any sort of shoe or boot goes well and while they have a bit more structure in their brushed cotton "hard pant" style, they are very soft and comfortable. And we can't wear "soft pants" everyday, right?
This is an incredibly soft, made in Canada Legging by Duffield Design and we like it with a shorter dress and socks & boots instead of tights ( with feet) for a more comfortable casual look and of course these are great for tunics as well. They are pictured above with a sweater dress

This week, we shared some outfit ideas in an Instagram Live and if you would like to see it, click here
Our focus was on versatility; if you can wear things at least three different ways, you get the most wear from these items. We love the idea of pre-planning this, but also being spontaneous and trying some things together. You don't always like the result, but sometimes you end up loving it, so we think it's worth a try!
Atina is wearing the Wide Leg Jeans from White Stuff, a Blouse from Thought Clothing and a machine washable Blazer from Duffield Design. Romina is wearing a Sweater from Thought Clothing and Pants from Armed Angels. We love recommending some pops of colour in your Fall/Winter wardrobe for a mood boost on the grey days. You can click on any of the highlighted words throughout this blog to learn more about these styles on our website
Atina's Outfits:
We wanted to show three different ways to wear the Fawn Pin Tuck Blouse, but you could use this idea with the blouse or shirt of your choice. Our selection is here in the Women's Sustainable Clothing Collection.
First outfit, shown and tagged above is the dressiest option
Second outfit we exchanged the blazer for a cozy sweater coat
Third outfit, we put the blouse with a jogger and a hoodie for a much more casual look. All are of course also comfortable!
Next up, we shared four more outfit options for the jogger since we know many of you love a comfy pant option that you can wear everyday.
Left -we paired the jogger with a really pretty cotton/linen blouse
Centre -we added a warm and cozy sweater
Right- we added a lightweight sweater and a blazer
A lot of you love a nice dress year round and these are both is great weight for 3 seasons for sure. Wear Spring and Fall as is and then layer tights and sweaters or blazers for the Winter. We're showing both Romina and Atina in a more casual sweater coat & Shacket, but they can both be dressed up as well. Remember, we're focusing on getting the most wear from your favourite clothing items
Atina's Dress & Sweater Coat
Romina's Outfits:
She's wearing one of our best selling pants - one that a lot of people like for a work or travel pant and we styled of with three different outfit ideas.
Left - Stretch Cotton Blazer, Blouse & Magdaa pants
Centre - Soft knit blazer, plaid blouse with the same pants
Right - Warm & Cozy Sweater
This Shacket makes a repeat appearance, since it's such a great third layer for so many outfits (Shacket = Shirt/Jacket ) and it's paired with a lightweight sweater and another of our top selling everyday pants. One of the things we did with Romina's outfits was to mix navy and black, to inspire you to do the same. In the pictures above, she has a black blazer on with navy pants & here she has on a navy sweater with black pants.
More outfits with the St James Pants:
Left - with best selling top knit "blouse"
Centre - with the same blouse from above, but with a more casual sweater
Right - with a dressy wrap top - we have it tucked in, but it looks great untucked and has a generous amount of figure flattering ruching.
Lots more outfits and tips are shared in the Instagram Live if you would like to watch, but to end this weeks review, see below for both models wearing the Organic Cotton Eco Dog Walker Sweater - one with a cropped wide comfy dress pant ( yes this exists) and the other in a printed legging. As always, we're available to help you find your very own personalized options either virtually, or ideally in our new shop at 77 Florence Street, Studio 105 so you can try things on and experiment with us!

We have some favourite suggestions for ways to make your wardrobe more sustainable and in this week's edition we are featuring some of our top selling styles from last year. Basics don't need to be boring. They can help you make so many outfits and if they are soft, comfortable and fit you well, you will want them on constant rotation in your every day wardrobe.
We took some of these basics and styled them on two of our Community Models so you can see how many different ways you can wear them. If you prefer to see the video, here's a link to watch this week's Instagram Live Style Session
Let's start with denim. If you have one pair that you really like that are in a mid to dark wash, you will be able to wear them with your whole wardrobe and dress them up if needed for a work event or dinner out.

]]>We've enjoyed sharing this Summer's "trend" : The Coastal Grandmother with you and will share some of the top items we have if you like this style and want to work on a Summer Capsule that will last you for many years, but Linen, which is a key fabric choice for this look has been a stylish and sustainable fabric for hot weather for years and is a really great timeless option for your wardrobe. Click HERE to see our Linen Collection
From a blog post on sustainable fibres READ ABOUT MORE HERE
On par with hemp, linen remains traditionally and historically one of the best and most sustainable fabrics to date.
Made from the flax plant, linen production uses the plant in its entirety, lessening waste from the get go. Flax is easily grown and quickly replenishable, using far less water than cotton, and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, making linen production very sustainable (this when dew-retting or enzyme-retting is used, not water-retting).
Linen as a fabric has a very long lifetime, as it’s one of the most durable fabrics out there. With a recent resurrection, linen clothing is coming back as people seek ways to lessen their fashion footprint. Linen is breathable, durable, lightweight, absorbent, antimicrobial, naturally moth-resistant, and cooling, making it perfect for summer days. It also reduces gamma radiation almost by half, protecting us from solar radiation. It’s the only fabric that is stronger when wet, and like hemp, becomes softer with use. Also, like hemp, micro-fibres from linen are of no concern, as they will naturally biodegrade in the water.
Linen pieces that are left undyed or naturally dyed will biodegrade 100% with time, making it sustainable and earth-friendly.
And here's a fun list from stylecaster.com to see if you are/or aspire to being a "coastal grandmother"
SHOP THIS LOOK: Dress, Pants & Hat
Here’s a list of 10 things a coastal grandmother would do:
Neutral Colours are KEY and for the summer we like all things this off-white, since most people are more comfortable to wear off white (vs white) year round. We style it here in all neutrals with the made in Canada Cropped Organic Jean & Zen Top
The Long Linen Top & a Straw Hat work for this look and and can be great options for travel too as they are cool to wear but look stylish too.

Cream Deodorant, This natural deodorant works and is one of our top sellers.
Meet Gaelyne Leslie, the founder of Crawford Street Skin Care - a Toronto based line of entirely natural skin care products. They produce their line in small batches in Toronto and are eco-conscious, chemical free and cruelty free and it's so local I generally pick up our orders on the way in to the shop. I hope you enjoy our Q&A with Gaelyne:
Q/ I know we met really early on at Logan & Finley, but I don't remember when you started Crawford Street Skin Care?
A/ I started Crawford Street in 2010 while I was working as a Television Producer at CBC Marketplace. I would work all day and then come home, put my kids to bed and start making deodorant! Eventually, in 2014, I left CBC to focus on Crawford Street full time.
Q/ Can you tell us a little bit about your inspiration to start a luxury natural skin care brand?
A/ About 12 years ago, I had a wake-up call on chemicals and cancer. As a journalist, I was interested in Environmental Health issues and I was doing a lot of research on chemicals in our everyday environments. These were seemingly innocuous chemicals that scientists and environmental awareness groups were revealing to have harmful side effects on human health. At the same time, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and, because there was no history of cancer in her family, I became more concerned with chemicals in our skincare and beauty products. This prompted me to look for a natural deodorant for myself only to find out none worked for me - I’d try each one at the beginning of the day and by noon I’d have to switch to my drug store brand. I kept thinking there must be a way to make a natural deodorant that works and also comes in beautiful and sustainable packaging. Even the natural brands like Tom’s came in plastic sticks. The deodorant was the first product I developed and started to sell - outside my family that is!
Q/ What excites you about developing products?
A/ From my years as an investigative journalist, I always loved the research processes. I like coming up with an idea for a product (usually based on a need that I have or my family has) and then looking at individual ingredients and their properties. I read a lot about how ingredients have been used in the past. I firmly believe that we don’t need to reinvent the wheel here. Our ancestors had a lot of wisdom to offer, we’ve just forgotten it along the way. Then I started trying them out. I usually do 4 or 5 tests of different ingredients and formulations to assess effectiveness, scent profile, texture, consistency, and colour. And then I ask my friends and family to try them out and give me their feedback. I basically crowd-source feedback from friends and family to pick the winning formula.
We asked Gaelyne about any of her favourites, so I thought I would share another one of my favourites. This is an old container I am re-using, but their new one is updated as part if their eco-responsible efforts, but this hand cream is part of my daily winding down ritual and I highly recommend it.
Q/ Do you have any favourite products?
A/ Right now I love the Clay Cleanser and the new Brightening Eye Cream. I was never a big user of eye creams but this one is really luxurious and gentle. The Beauty Balm I cannot live without. I use it for so many things! If I was asked to pick one product to take on a deserted island that would be the one.
Q/ What inspires you?
A/ Women! Women inspire me. My girlfriends, my mother, my cousins, the women I admire, their ideas, their needs, their wants. I am inspired by the ancient ways women have cared for their skin and their bodies throughout history and the wisdom they offer us.
Q/ We're excited about introducing the weekend getaway kit. What do you think our community might like to know about these products?
A/ The inspiration behind the Weekend Getaway Kit was what products are Must Haves in your travel bag for a weekend away. We also decided that we needed to add a travel size of the Outdoor Body Spray for summer (our version of bug spray). So the kit includes the essentials of what you might need for a cottage invitation or a summer road trip.
Q/ Do you think your skincare routine should change with the seasons?
A/ Absolutely! Summer skincare routines are generally about lightening up. Kind of like clothes, in the winter we need layers and protection from the elements, in the summer we can dispense with a layer or two and choose lighter options for moisturizing. One thing that is not seasonal, however, is sun protection. An SPF is needed year round, you just might need to apply more often in the summer.
Q/ Could you tell us more about Body Scrubs?
A/ A lot of people ask which of our scrubs they should use on their bodies. The Maris Sal Dead Sea salt scrub or the Coconut Sugar Polish. They are both great for sloughing off dead skin, and my skin gets just as dry from sun exposure as it does from the cold. There are a few differences though. The first is the main exfoliating ingredient. Sugar is more gentle on the skin and therefore best for people who have sensitive, or delicate skin. My cousin who has psoriasis says it's the only scrub she can use. Salt by its very nature is more exfoliating because the grains are larger than sugar, but that means it might be too harsh for some people. The second difference is the scent. The sugar scrub has a coconut and macadamia nut smell that reminds me of tropical vacations and pina coladas, the salt scrub had a more invigorating, eucalyptus scent that is reminiscent of Scandinavian spas. Both scrubs are very moisturizing so in the end it really just comes down to personal preference and skin type.
Q/ Do you have a favourite product from Logan & Finley?
A/ The summer before the pandemic I came into the store to buy a summer dress and I left with three. All linen and I still love them! I realized a few years ago that I’m not a shorts person and even trying to coordinate skirts and tops is too much thinking in the summer! I love a light, loose summer dress and sandals. It will take you from a baseball game to a patio! Logan and Finley always has a great selection of dresses in natural fabrics like linen and I really appreciate that. Check out some of this Summer's Natural Fibre Clothing

As part of our Series: The Life & Style of Interesting People, we interviewed Megan Duffield of Made in Canada Sustainable Clothing Brand Duffield Design:
Q/ How would you define your lifestyle?
A/ Right now, I’m working on simplifying my life: Getting back to basics and nourishing who I am through being active, eating well and finding joy in the beauty of life. Being true to who I am and following my heart has recently led me down a new path of self-discovery. So, I guess you could say my lifestyle has in some ways dramatically shifted in the last few months but now settling into who I feel I really am and it feels like a simple and profound shift.
Q/ Is spending time in nature important to you? Tell us why!
A/ Absolutely! Nature completes my life. I grew up in a rural setting outside of Ottawa and was constantly outside. Being close to nature has always been a very important part of my life.
Q/ On a scale between 1-10, how ‘Green’ would you say you are?
A/ 7.5.. I feel there is always so much room for improvement. I have a wonderful friend who lives off grid and reflects a level of respect and balance with their environment that is both inspiring and humbling. Just when I think I’m doing my best someone quietly shows me a better way just by living their values. I realize not everyone can live that way but we can all try to do our best given our personal situations.
Q/ What excites you about choosing a sustainable lifestyle?
A/ Living consciously, because that’s what I believe it comes down to. Making an effort to live in a way that’s aligned with my true values. It’s a way of connecting more deeply with myself and honouring my inner knowing & truth. It’s a reflection of how I want to show up in the world.
Q/ Was there an ‘aha’ moment you recall where you realized you wanted to put
more effort towards sustainable living?
A/ I think that moment came when I was first doing research for my business. That’s when I really realized how much harm was being done by the fashion industry globally. I had a moment where I thought to myself, “Wow! I don’t want to be part of the problem and I want to try and offer a solution.” I wanted to bring an alternative so people can choose what they want
to support. That’s when things really started to shift for me. I was 23 years old.
Megan joined us for an Instagram Live and shared so many great nuggets about the S22 Collection and her brand. Watch it here!
Q/ If you were to give advice to others about embarking on a ‘greener’ life and
style, where/how would you tell them to start.
A/ Asking yourself what’s important to you? Where do your values lie? Start with what you are most passionate about and make the changes from there. Once you start it’s kind of a gateway into a higher level of being, thinking and living. I feel like everything starts to shift from there.
Q/ What are you passionate about? Where do you find inspiration?
A/ In nature, just being in nature inspires me. I find it’s beauty humbling. Nobody does it better than Mother Nature when it comes to design, colour, and creativity.
Q/ How did you hear about Logan and Finley?
A/ I came across Logan & Finley when we were doing research to find the perfect vendors to carry Duffield Design. Independent boutiques that held the same or similar values to our own. I happened to be visiting my clothing manufacturer in Toronto pre-covid, and I was walking down the street at night. I stopped in front of Logan and Finley and thought it would be the perfect boutique to carry Duffield Design! The rest is history.
Q/ What place do you think Logan and Finley has in helping Torontonians live a
greener life and style?
A/ By offering an alternative to conventional products and by living your values which of course inspires people in a wonderful way to live greener.

How do you choose? We decided to share a summary of just some of the pant styles we have in the shop now. We shared an Instagram Live with Stefanie modelling each pair and here's the LINK if you want to see it.
The pant pictured above is the Armedangels Karolinaa Jersey Pant & it's soft and flowy with a great drape. It has a tie at the waist that you can tie at the front or back and with a matching black tank, it looks like a dressy jumpsuit. I think this could be a year round pant if you wore a tight underneath it in colder climates, but it's perfect for spring/summer/fall. It's made from: LENZING™ ECOVERO™ the world's most environmentally friendly viscose fibre and is made from European woods. The material falls lightly, with a silky and shiny look, pleasant on the skin.
From Left to Right:
Toad & Co Chaka Wide Leg Pant - this pant is made from a super soft blend of tencel and organic cotton and has a wide leg, comfortable wide waist band and two side pockets. As they describe it : "This is definitely a comfy pant, but with a stylish look that can easily be dressed up when needed." I think this is a 3 season pant, but not the right weight for cold winters.....to wear outside the house that is ;)
Armedangels Magdaa Pant - this one is a more tailored pant. Looks a lot like a dress pant, but feels like a sweatpant. We're getting low on stock, since this has been really popular, so snap one up if we have your size, or get on the waitlist to be notified when the fall order arrives. It's too heavy for the summer, but a great almost all year round pant It's also made from the Lenzing Ecovero fabric. (also pictured Left below )
Thought Clothing Dashka Pant - definitely a fan favourite. We have it styled here as a work out pant, but if you saw the live or some other times we have styled this, you can definitely dress it up too. It has side pockets, a high, fold down waist and a jogger cuff at the bottom. It's a blend of organic cotton and bamboo. I think it's a 3 season pant and likely in the hot summer, you can pull the legs up and make a capri

Back in the first few panicky weeks of the COVID pandemic, I made some key decisions – a personal strategy if you will, for how I was going to navigate a period of time that was feeling somewhat scary and very uncertain. At that time, I decided:
I was going to buy Canadian products wherever I could.
I was going to purchase from small, independently owned businesses wherever I could.
I was going to be intentional about creating a physical, mental and emotional space that made me feel good every day.
I was going to do a better job of reducing waste in my life.
At the time I decided if I was going to be forced into a simpler life, I was going to embrace it rather than focusing on what I was losing or missing out on.
Enter Logan & Finley – a company I already loved that had the product line and expertise to help me check all these boxes. As Julie started building out her website and I started paying more attention to her product offering beyond clothes I found so many things to incorporate into my life. The other day I was sitting in my home workspace feeling particularly joyful and I noticed just how much Logan & Finley has become part of my day. I started this post as a message to Julie about how the selection of offerings she has curated have become an integral part of my daily life and routine.
Hot drinks are comfort to me, and I bookend my days with treats from Logan & Finley. My husband and I are coffee lovers, and last year we decided to start grinding out own beans (so much better than the Keurig coffee we used to drink). We have since become die-hard fans of Las Chicas Breakfast Roast Coffee. It is the perfect way to start each day – and I love that it comes from another small family business in St. Thomas, Ontario. My wind down tea every night is Ashwaganda & Chill. I have always been a fan of chamomile tea, but this blend is like nothing I’ve ever tasted. I have enjoyed all the Lake & Oak teas I’ve purchased through Logan & Finley but the Ashwaganda & Chill is definitely my favourite.
My mask of choice these days is the Linen Blend Face Mask. I love it because it is big enough to comfortably cover my nose, mouth and chin. I like the adjustability of it, and most importantly I wear glasses and find my glasses don’t fog up wearing this one. I have all 3 colours now and find I can easily co-ordinate with any outfit. My masks have been washed over and over and are holding up really well. I roll the CARRY-ON aromatherapy blend into my mask a few times a day because I just can’t get enough of the energizing scent.
There are a couple of other great smells that have entered my life through Logan & Finley. The first comes from Fenwick Candles. When I’m working from home (and therefore not wearing a mask) I burn the peppermint candle all day. I find this the perfect scent to keep me focused. My end of the day treat is the Velvet Eye Mask. I actually don’t put this over my eyes too often but I sleep with it on my pillow every night. It has hands down the best ever lavender scent I have ever smelled. In the past with other lavender scented products or sachets, I’ve found the scent doesn’t last, but this one has remained strong for months now. I am the kind of person who often has a racing mind when I lie down to go to sleep and I find the lavender scent helps me to relax and drift off to sleep.
One of my staple products these days is the Get the Funk Out Hand Sanitizer. I have never been a fan of hand sanitizer, because I hate the idea of covering my hand in chemicals. Enter COVID and all of a sudden, I was having to sanitize my hands a bajillion times per day. I am so grateful to have discovered this fresh smelling natural sanitizer that doesn’t dry my hands out as badly as some of the other sanitizers available on the market. The little spray bottle it comes in is super handy (I now have one everywhere). For me the hand sanitizing is usually followed up with Matter Hand Cream which I have sworn never to be without again. I love the fresh light scent and it is truly one of the best hand creams I have every used.
While using all these amazing products, I tend to be dressed head to toe in clothing I’ve purchased at Logan & Finley. The quality, versatility and comfort of clothes from Logan & Finley simply cannot be overstated. I tend to be a big fan of FIG. I would call the OPA pant my pandemic pant – they literally go from work to Pilates in my little basement gym. They are a nice weight for the winter months and wash incredibly well. I have pair that is 3 years old and still looks fantastic. Since last summer I have been washing all my clothes using the Bare Home Lavender & Sage Laundry detergent. This detergent smells heavenly when you’re using it but doesn’t leave a heavy scent on your clothes. I was skeptical at first that this product would work as well as the traditional detergent I used on my boys’ dirty, smelly clothes but it’s been fantastic. Best of all, it doesn’t aggravate the sensitive skin that my whole family seems to be plagued with.
As I reflect on these favourites, it makes me feel good that these are all Canadian businesses, including some very small Canadian companies. More and more I am finding Logan & Finley to be my one stop shop for the lifestyle I want.

Here are a few of the things I learned:
pictured wearing the Emily Blazer and the Rachel Skinny Jean, both made in Canada
Heather Storey, a long time Logan & Finley customer and brand new Real Estate Agent with The Storey Team bubbles over with infectious positive energy and teaches us that it's never to late to re-invent yourself.
When we were talking, I realized that Heather like so many of the women who shop at Logan & Finley, might have come for the clothing and are loving having a more functional wardrobe filled with go to favourites, but also have embraced choosing more sustainable options for their homes and gifts as well. Here's a close facsimile of what Heather has given as client gifts - we don't want to spoil any surprises of course!
Next up was Briana Krushelnicki a Toronto therapist. Bri has been a customer for a few years, and we often compare notes about what it's like to work retail, especially for a small business. ( she works at Bike Shop too) But what seems to have resonated with me the most from our talk and I know also with many of you, was her description of our "window of tolerance" and that it might be a little bit smaller these days. I'm linking to our talk here for those who haven't had the chance to listen, since I know so many of you have shared with me that you found this to be a really helpful point of view.
Pictured wearing the Grande Cardigan, the Teresa Top & the Byrne Midi Skirt
Bri is the opposite to Heather, she came for the less waste solutions we have and then started to invest in her wardrobe as well. I know starting a business during a pandemic might be difficult, but I find her personality and what she shares on Instagram to be inspiring so I know she will be a very supportive therapist to those who match up with her style. Here's a link to a post she shared on how to pick a therapist.
Pictured are the May you Find Joy card set, The Little Book of Hygge & one of our custom made Ceramic Coasters
Adrienne Enns, the founder of the May You Know Joy brand joined us next and she lit up every picture she was in and really did deliver the joy. One of the cards from her new intention card sets is shown above and she was encouraging us to try and take the opportunity to find the joy everyday.
Pictured Viviana Sweater and the Nicol Jeans
Here's a quote from her website:
"My life philosophy is simple.
Intentional living means we choose how we’re going to show up in the world. It connects us to our deepest truth, our highest good and our most fulfilling life. Being intentional is about being mindful and choosing. Choosing joy is one of those choices.
We all have raw material in our lives and it’s what we do with it that matters."
Adrienne helps individuals and groups with living with intentions and has an online program you can check our and also a podcast, where I was thrilled to check something off my bucket list. I wanted to be a guest on a podcast and was thrilled to have this opportunity. Here's a link if you'd like to give it a listen!
Pictured Asha Cardigan, Dharma Top & Tillaa Jeans
Reena Parekh was so kind to say yes, when I asked her to join us. I had seen her on social media ( we have a mutual friend) and I admired what she shared in her posts and her hustle to pivot her training business to online, during the quarantine, with her kids at home and gyms closed) She specialized in postpartum fitness and has just launched a new program for strength training for new moms. The link to her site is above.
What I learned from our chat that has resonated with me the most, was a podcast she had listened to and recommended. I listened and helped me to understand better something that had been perplexing me for the past 4 years. Give it a list and then let's talk....we have some considerable work to do.
Listen to Brene Brown's interview with Sonja Renee Taylor
Pictured here is the Matter Hand Cream
I've kind of been obsessed with Matter products for years, I found them originally at the One of a Kind Show and asked if I could represent them to all my "outdoor" clients when I was a sales rep. So, I have know Denise for a while and admire the thought and care she puts in to making her natural skincare line. I'm proud to sell it in the shop and it was fun to sit down with Denise and here her story about starting her business.
What I learned most from talking to her was that I think the reason some small businesses succeed is the passion that's deeply rooted in the soul of the person who creates the business and Matter Company was started to bring Denise's love of the outdoors, and the therapeutic benefits of herbal remedies into people's lives.
Pictured here Helmi sweater and Rachel Jeans
Thanks to Heather, Briana, Adrienne, Reena & Denise for joining us, Stefanie for capturing the pictures and setting the scene for our conversations and all of you who joined us. Let's keep doing our best to keep the conversation going, keep in touch and share our gifts with each other. I think it helps!
Covid-19 has changed a lot of things for a lot of people and I know that many of us are struggling finding the ways to navigate all of these changes and find our equilibrium. Prioritizing self care seems like a good investment and finding the the simple pleasures, the happy moments and the connections to others seems like a good direction, but if you still feel a bit untethered, maybe it's resilience work we need to be doing.
I read and article that said "to be more resilient in an crisis, focus on meaning not happiness" I know when people ask me for advice, I often say "focus on the why" This testimonial from a customer is a great example of my why - the meaning behind my business. I love making people happy!
"I think that Julie is the real magic of Logan and Finley. Just having the perfect inventory is not nearly enough. What makes the shopping experience so special is having someone who understands ones individual tastes and/or needs. I am not usually one who enjoys shopping for clothes. When I walk into a store I sort of glaze over, totally overwhelmed, and not knowing where to start.
At Logan and Finley this is not a problem. As soon as I’m through the door, Julie has a changing room set aside for me and she is filling it with things that she thinks I should try. Often I question her judgement when I look at things on the hanger but once I try them on, I know she was right. Instead of my normal problem of not finding anything that suits me, the problem is trying to decide what I should leave behind!
Since I live a long way from Toronto the travel restrictions have made it impossible to go to the store. Before this I had never tried to buy clothes online; I’ve always had to try them on first. This year I confidently purchased a new Logan and Finley summer wardrobe by phone (and online), with Julie’s help and I have really enjoyed every bit of it. The surprise boxes are a great addition to the offerings. I totally trusted Julie to choose things that I would love and she didn’t disappoint.
The non-clothing options are also chosen with the same care and respect. As I am not familiar with many of those types of things I again resorted to a Low-Waste Home Surprise Box and was amazed with all the wonderful things it contained. I was so thrilled, in fact, that l bought one for each of our daughters and one for a neighbour. They all had rave reviews.
Logan and Finley is not just a store, it is a complete shopping experience and one I am really grateful to have available to me."
"You have 0 kilometres left before you need to refuel" is the message my car told me one night this week. My personal tank was empty too and I was feeling nervous that my resilience felt like it was at an all time low right when I needed it the most and then a customer filled up my "tank" with this wonderfully kind review. It helped me to focus on what's important to me. Taking care of myself helps me to do better work. I'm no expert, but I know that we are going to be navigating this for a while and we need to be as equipped as possible to deal with what life throws our way and so I sought out a couple of articles from a couple of other business owners who I know prioritize health and wellness to hopefully inspire you to take good care of yourself and others in your life and build up your resilience. Whatever self-care looks like for you, however you fill up your tank, I hope you will take time to prioritize yourself.
Sarah Lang, a Toronto based professional coach had posted about Resilience and this paragraph really resonated with me:
"Resilience means moving through periods of stress and difficulty and emerging on the other side. The way we do this isn’t enduring or white-knuckling or “feeling okay” all the way through a hard time so that we can bounce back “to normal” when it’s over.
The beauty of resilience is that in moving through our struggle, we are transformed by it.
We allow the experience – in all it’s discomfort, confusion or pain – to shape us. So that we emerge on the other side, not only standing, but standing taller, with new insights, wisdom and compassion.
When we become more aware of our feelings, and less terrified of them, we are able to make this journey."
Check out the whole post here on the Sarah Lang Consulting website. And it's a part two on the topic of resilience. Here's the link to Everyday Resilience #1 and Sarah has a sign up to receive resilience tips and other great resources on her site as well.
Here's Sarah, looking radiant in one of the dresses she got in one of her Surprise clothing boxes and here's a link to why she likes to wear a dress.
"Love, love, love my new pieces from Logan and Finley.
When a customer approached me with this idea back when I mentioned that I thought I needed to close the shop to encourage people to stay home and be safe, I said that I really wasn't sure that my business would survive this. Business has changed the past couple of years and this has impacted my bottom line significantly and I was already wondering if small businesses like mine were even relevant anymore. It seems that we the consumer are almost overwhelmed with options and when the world is at our fingertips - literally in our hands - and we think we can have everything, sometimes what a small shop offers can seem like it's not enough. To compete with the giant vertical brands that launch new product on a calendar and fill everyone's inboxes with deal after deal trains consumers to think that this is the standard. FREE shipping and deal after deal means that if you are not doing this, to some, you're doing something wrong. The reality of things like Black Friday becoming such a big part of how people consume means that the November/December revenue that has been what gets a small business through the Winter, has become significantly less able to do this. To give you some context, the first really nice weather weekend in March usually equals about 10 times the business of the last 8-12 weeks and kicks off the strong sales season of spring for a business like mine. This year, it didn't happen that way and now in what can be our biggest sales opportunity, our storefront which had been doing 93% of our revenue is closed.
You can ready what she said here:
I was feeling scared and I was so touched by her offer, that through my tears, I said yes. We launched it and I had so many people criticize me that I took it down. I realized that this was going to be so much of a bigger deal for so many people and that my small business was not very important in the greater scheme of things. I didn't want to offend anyone and I don't expect anyone or anything to "rescue me" or Save Logan & Finley. I understand that in the bigger picture, everyone needs to do what they can to support themselves and their families and so many people are affected by the financial impact of this pandemic. We all likely feel somewhat guilty when we think about how hard others are affected, and we all have to have some perspective. Myself included.
I closed the store before it was mandated, because I felt like it was the right thing to do. I kept on my employee ( who has since moved back home) and tried to keep things going with our online business and I reached out and shared with my customers that this was going to be a struggle, but I would do my best to keep things going. I have worked with the brands we stock on payment arrangements and tried to find ways to get some support for the business. Even if there is a government sponsored deferral of rent, it's a deferral and even if I were to receive the government backed loan ( there is no guarantee on getting this - many businesses have been declined and I haven't heard back yet) it's a loan.
*4/24/20 update the new rent proposal is great if landlords agree to it, but how it is proposed currently, it looks like we pay too much rent to qualify? TBD
So, I have tried really hard to keep things fun and upbeat on our social media, find ways that we can be useful and a combination of our customers generous support with orders, and gift certificates and having fun sending and receiving our surprise boxes....our expenses have actually gone up. For April, with the additional cost to put all sales through online, the added shipping costs and packaging costs our expenses have gone up by over $3000. To have sales at about 1/3 of what they would be if our storefront was open and to have all the same expenses, plus these additional expenses is our reality. It's not business as usual. We are doing our best and we will be able to likely do enough business during the closure to not go out of business, but working this hard to just pay our rent and our suppliers and not be able to actually make money - which for a business is key - will make the next steps, how we navigate our way out of it, when the time comes harder.
Looking forward - it will not be "business as usual" there will be supply chain challenges, but there will also be businesses that have had the ability to rest a little bit gearing up to be really bright and shiny to attract you when you can actually go out again. There will also be businesses that won't make it who will be liquidating. So, given that I am very interested in being one of the businesses that survives this, I am asking for you to consider helping out a little if you can.
Ways to help:
It's hard to ask for help and I have struggled a lot with the idea of this campaign, but I ultimately decided to do it for three reasons:
Logan & Finley is an eco-conscious business just a little ahead of the curve and it's finally the time that people are interested in what we offer, so we want to be able to continue to show some leadership in the stylish and sustainable clothing for the really awesome women who want to feel good about themselves both with how they put themselves together, but also how they show up in the world. This is a time that smaller and more ethical brands need to rise up, not fall away.
"Logan & Finley is a breath of fresh air along busy Queen West. If you like to support local and environmentally friendly brands, Logan & Finley is a must-go-to. Julie does such an amazing job at curating the store to provide products that you will love and feel good about buying."
People love my little shop and the eco-conscious community that has grown out of it....so it's worth the fight!
"Best store in Toronto. Julie gets to know her customers so well that I’ve actually had family come in shopping for me and Julie has been able to make tailored recommendations based on what she knows I like. Great selection of ethically made clothing, sustainable low-waste housewares, and eco-friendly products. If you’re shopping for yourself or looking for gifts for others, Julie and the team at Logan & Finley almost certainly have something for you."
Small business is really unique. It's becoming rare to find an independent business in your neighbourhood, especially in a big city, where people know your name and know what you might like and provides personalized service. It's also a lot harder to do this in the competitive world where we have access to everything, or think we do and it's nice when a shop takes away all this noise for you and just offers up well curated product that is useful to you.
"I have been coming here for over 5 years and I have never been disappointed. I now get almost all my clothes here. Julie works hard to provide a great selection of eco-friendly, sustainable products. A wardrobe built by products from Logan and Finley is one that is full of possibilities. Do check out other products such as skincare, home care and kitchen essentials, all sustainable. I cannot rave enough about this great store you have to check it out, and you also will be amazed."
I commented in this article that I find people very interested to support small business as a concept, but some of the micro ones, the ones that people say are falling through the cracks are often the ones that people will miss the most if they aren't able to make it. So now is the opportunity to do what we can to try and invest in our local communities in the way that we can to give the kinds of brands we like some help to keep going. I am cautiously optimistic about Logan & Finley and am committed to working hard to navigate my business through this and wanted to share my candid thoughts with the hope that it might help others to know our realities and that maybe we can emerge out of this pandemic with continued kindness, generosity and as better more conscious consumers & in case it helps anyone else. In every community there is a little shop like mine with passionate owners and loyal customers and these are a unique breed that I hope others agree are important parts of our neighbourhoods. I've concluded that I think small businesses are even more relevant than ever before and what we offer is of value. Not everything can be done online. The personal touch matters.

Feel Good Guru catered our very first event in 2013 and Moira and I became friends. Small business owners tend to connect and want to create opportunity for each other and I am so impressed with her hustle and the care she puts into everything she does. Feel Good Guru recently moved into an expanded kitchen to keep up with their growing office lunch catering business and then....everyone started working from home. So she has quickly adapted to putting more focus on her meal delivery service and delivering healthy, nourishing, plant based meals to your home. So, you don't have to cook....and you can #stayhealthy & #stayhome ....and you can invest in a local business. That sounds delicious doesn't it? If you would like to order from them, check out their Instagram & give them a try. Moira gave us a "perk" loganfinley20 is good for 20% off your first order.
Here's what she had to say when we caught up:
How would you define your lifestyle?
Clean, simple… and plant-based. A lifestyle conscious about what I put in and on my body. I preach quality over quantity and try to embody the holistic lifestyle into my day-to-day as much as possible. Mainly meaning supporting the mind and soul, just as much as the body. Balance is important for this and I try to honour that as much as possible.
Is spending time in nature important to you? Tell us why!
Totally! There’s nothing like a fresh morning run to wake you up. I suffer from bouts of anxiety every now and then, and I find getting outside and taking in the fresh air really helps settle the mind. I always end up feeling better when I return, from when I started. There’s also something so special about admiring a beautiful wild flower along the way, and reconnecting with nature.
What excites you about choosing a sustainable lifestyle?
Knowing my day-to-day activities and contributions are not negatively impacting our precious planet, makes me feel good about what I’m doing. I also love the idea of using something made entirely from plants, as opposed to synthetics.
Was there an ‘aha’ moment you recall where you realized you wanted to put
more effort towards sustainable living?
After watching more and more documentaries on pollution and the overall health of our planet, I became way more aware of everything. Packaging in the stores stood out, I started noticing plastic in my home, everywhere for that matter. I knew I needed to change and be more mindful of the products I choose to buy and support.
If you were to give advice to others about embarking on a ‘greener’ life and
style, where/how would you tell them to start?
Start by looking at the products you use every single day. Try to make a few small changes to your everyday habits. This can be investing in a reusable water bottle, some reusable cotton mesh bags for groceries, and reusable cloth bags for shopping. This alone cuts the amount of plastic used by so much. It’s these everyday changes that will really add up to make a positive difference.
What are you passionate about? Where do you find inspiration?
I have always been passionate about health and wellness, and overall healthy living. From home-cooked whole foods, to natural DIY cleaning products. I’m all about natural remedies and herbal concoctions, since I value nature so much. This is why at Herb Market, we recognize the true connection between health and nature, and are committed to being entirely natural. Herbs and botanicals really seem to inspire me, both in the kitchen, and in my studio when I’m formulating skincare.
How did you hear about Logan and Finley?
I was pleasantly surprised to find Logan and Finely on Instagram, while browsing high end boutiques and Toronto shops. I saw a thoughtfully curated selection of quality clothing and every day products, and fell in love. Something conveyed such sincere comfort to me. A rare gem I believe.
What place do you think Logan and Finley has in helping Torontonians & now the online world! live a more eco-conscious life and style?
By providing quality, natural products that last and are practical, help provide ‘the path’ towards living a more eco-conscious lifestyle. It helps when you can shop with ease and put trust in a store to provide quality eco-conscious products.
Thanks to Moira, Ashley and Melissa for sharing their inspiration with us. I know every small business is working really hard to make everything work right now and we can choose to invest in our local brands and local economy, when we can use things we all sell.
Logan & Finley has always been about Community and so in an effort to be encouraging and supportive during what for most of us is an unprecedented time filled with all sorts of emotions, we asked three woman if they would contribute to our newsletter. The thing that always makes me feel better, is helping someone else. Even when I am quite focused on my own challenges, especially then, if I focus on what I can do to contribute, it always makes me feel better. One of my favourite quotes from Audrey Hepburn is:
"As you grow older, you will realize that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others."
We are all in this together and I think that the more we can slow down and really take care of ourselves and be present to hear others, we will be able to support each other through this. We each have something to contribute and it doesn't have to cost a thing. Here are my tips and the things I am trying to do to keep myself healthy:
Sleep. Eat Healthy Food. Take some extra Vitamins and Supplements. Get some Fresh Air. Let myself cry if I need to, to release some pressure. Try to see the humour in things and have a giggle. Try to be kind, generous and thoughtful especially when I am feeling scared. Reach out and connect. I'm no expert on any of these things, but they do help me and I hope you do your best to look after yourself and be respectful of the things we are being asked to do to help keep everyone safe and prevent the spread of the virus.
Be Well
Julie
Intentional Living
In these confusing and challenging times, our most intentional living becomes even more essential. What we do matters - even the small things - especially the small things. Being intentional means we choose how we’re going to show up and we take mindful action.
For your own intention setting practice, I have a few suggestions:
- set an intention each day (you can use a card deck if you have one, you can choose one of the 3 foundational intentions: love, kindness & gratitude or choose whatever is in your heart)
- create quiet time to ground (this may be meditation, reading, going for a walk, some kind of movement)
- look for opportunities to be of service (if you’re well - call a friend, reach out to a neighbour - your kindness really matters right now)
- reflect on what you are grateful for
Now is a time to be mindful and conscious of our actions.
If you are feeling overwhelmed (and we all are), take time for activities that calm you, seek out online communities and limit your intake of social media (be informed but, not overwhelmed).
The world is always striving for balance - dark and light. Connect with all things that bring light into your life. Do not feed the darkness.
All of your small actions have a profound and cumulative effect. Be intentional.

Physical Fitness
In this time of uncertainty and chaos, we can all take a moment to incorporate some movement into our days. Physical activity will look different for everyone depending on the resources and space they have to work with. During the next few weeks, remember to take care of your bodies, not just physically, but mentally too, with some movement breaks. My tips to maintain a healthy movement routine during this difficult time are:
1. Honour what YOUR body wants and needs. We may need a little bit of a rest, a walk around the block with the dog or kids, or a HIIT workout online. Listen to what you truly need. Before the world shut down non-essential travel and social distancing, a lot of us were moving so fast and likely feeling burnt out. Use this newly acquired down time to treat your body with respect. Sometimes it doesn't mean doing every free online workout today and taking a few minutes to stretch and relax instead.
2. Get your friends and family in on it. I have been sharing some free workouts via Instagram over the last few days and you can do the same. Video call your friends and family and workout side-by-side with your screens. It will help to get the socializing some of us may be craving during this isolation and distancing period and keep us accountable.
3. Implement a new routine. By March, some of us have probably forgotten about our movement based goals and intentions for 2020. This is a great time to reflect on what is working and reevaluate where we may need some support and enhancing to help us feel our best.
Stay tuned to my website www.letsdiscoveryou.com and Instagram @rachelfackoury for more tips and workouts during this isolation period.

Here's a link to some of our Sustainable Living tips.
Get your copy of Forest Bathing here and while you're in the Gift Collection, have a look at our seasonal book selection.
For those who enjoy spending time outdoors, maybe some cool year round picnic supplies would make a great gift. Here's the link to the dishes reminiscent of the vintage Fiesta Ware, but in a bamboo composite for easy care and the other things we recommend every picnic kit could use:
cups, bowls, small plates, large plates, insulated bottle, ( we included the family size - but there are others sizes too) cutlery sets, Turkish towel that doubles as a picnic blanket, unpaper towels that double as napkins & we have this really cool new stainless steel spork that's not pictured, but would make a great stocking stuffer for someone committed to reducing their use of single use items.
Super cute wool neck warmer Snood and Hat and comfortable Tunic with pockets are all gift ideas for those who like to be stylish, but cozy too!
And, this Hot Water Bottle with Cover is a favourite for the holiday season. I have had one for years, that I bought on a vacation in Scotland and I use it all the time. It's great hot for aches and pains and I think most teenage girls you know would love one. But it's also great at the foot of your bed to keep your feet toasty.....and don't laugh, but you can freeze the water in the bottle and then also put it in your bed to keep you cool.... if you know what I mean ;) Tired muscles also can benefit from a Steam Bath and some Heat Rub too!
For Him...we have a small collection of t-shirts and socks and a few flannel pj bottoms left in stock - the socks are online, but the rest is in-store only. And we have other gift ideas for the guys, the insulated bottles are great for water, but also come with a cafe lid for drinking on the go. And the tablet holder is handy for watching things on your device. This new pumpkin seed chocolate is delicious and this cocktail recipe kit could come in handy for hosting this holiday season.
For Her...Did you know that most women would love a cozy set of pjs, but often don't buy them for themselves? Here's a cute set, some sleep spray, bath bomb and candle for winding down for the night. For inspiration, 52 Lists for Calm &/or a 52 Lists Planner.
The Little Book of Hygge - give this as a gift with tea, socks and and candle in one of our new kraft paper gift boxes, tied up with made in Canada cotton twine. for a really thoughtful gift. AND....one of the items it seems like many of you are looking for is the reusable tea bag. It's both waste-free and solves that nasty problem of "there's plastic in my tea bag" You get two organic cotton ones per box and they wash up beautifully in the wash. This would pair nicely with a reusable mug for a friend or colleague that likes tea and we're getting a delivery of tea this week from Lake & Oak and will update the website with the new blends as soon as it arrives.
Stefanie's Outfit: Cardigan, T-shirt, Scarf, Jeans
It's a cute look made from great quality, versatile basics and any one of them would make a great gift.
Some of these components are available in store only and some are selling out, but the idea is that you can build many different looks if you select the right basics for your wardrobe and giving a gift of a basic, a gift certificate, a shopping trip or a wardrobe consultation would be a great gift idea to someone who would like their wardrobe to be sustainable and ethical.
Here's a link to learn more about building a capsule wardrobe.
For any woman - the core items: tank, belt, jeans
For the young adult - this is one of the coolest t-shirts and they might like a collapsible, reusable mug too
For the more established woman - a new style of blazer and an insulated bottle
The Blazer everyone loves. For many it's a bit of a surprise to them, how much they like it. It's made in Toronto, from sustainably harvested bamboo, milled into fibre in a closed-loop ( eco-friendly) way and manufactured here in Toronto. And it's comfortable, and it's really, really flattering and likely it's the best investment most women can make in their wardrobes.

It looks great with a blouse and a dress pant and also just with a tunic and leggings too. We also have one that's mostly cotton with just 5% cashmere for those who find wool scratchy and the poncho makes a great gift since it's cozy, can be a way to dress up an outfit and is the perfect versatile item to take with you on vacation. ]]>Meet Carley, Holistic Nutritionist and Wellness Educator.
Here's how she answered our questions.
How would you define your lifestyle?
I live a holistic, active and balance life. I’m always growing, learning, shifting, changing and moving. I try to live each day with gratitude, curiosity and intention.
Is spending time in nature important to you? Tell us why!
Of course! This is so important to me. As someone who struggles with anxiety I find spending time in nature is such a valuable tool (amongst other things) to keep me feeling grounded, recharged and calm.
I am incredible fortunate to have a partner that loves nature as much as I do. Although we live in a large city, we make time to go to go on hikes, walks and bike rides.
On a scale between 1-10, how ‘Green’ would you say you are?
I would say that the past 3 years I’ve changed a lot of little things (which add up!)
I would say I am a 7 but slowly working towards an 8. I have reduced my single use plastics significantly but using canvas tote bags for produce, reusable coffee cups, reusable water bottles, bamboo utensils, I don’t use straws and I rarely order takeout.
What excites you about choosing a sustainable lifestyle?
Food waste and single use plastics break my heart. I love to do my part to eliminate waste and reduce my carbon foot print. I get very excited about educating and inspiring others to do the same.
Was there an ‘aha’ moment you recall where you realized you wanted to putmore effort towards sustainable living?
I worked in the restaurant industry for over 8 years and witnessed first-hand of the astronomical amount of food waste and single use plastics that goes on behind the scenes. I remember one day feeling very frustrated and it inspired me to start living more sustainably.
When I went back to school for nutrition and began living a more holistic and plant-based lifestyle, I took environmental studies where learned more about sustainable agriculture and the overall state of our planet. This is when I started to make big changes in my life.
Abeego Food Wraps & Stasher Bags
If you were to give advice to others about embarking on a ‘greener’ life and style, where/how would you tell them to start?
The kitchen is always a great place to start. Using reusable containers to pack your lunch, swapping bee wax food wrap instead of plastic wrap and shop strategically to avoid food waste.
Keeping in mind that its ok to start slow. Sustainability and a greener lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t all or nothing. It’s all about exploring, learning, experimenting, committing to increasingly green practices and, above all, doing it with love and intention.
What are you passionate about? Where do you find inspiration?
Holistic health, cooking with local whole foods, community, travel, mother nature and herbal medicine. I find inspiration in nature, travelling, books, podcasts, local farmer’s markets, collaboration and getting involved + hosting events that I care about.
How did you hear about Logan and Finley?
Through Social Media and from walking by the store. I’m so glad I did.
What’s your most treasured item from Logan and Finley? Why?
I’m always on the go but love packing my lunch. I would say my stainless steel Dalcini lunch container. I use it all the time and it conveniently fits into my bag perfectly.
What place do you think Logan and Finley has in helping Torontonians live a greener life and style?
Logan and Finley is a great place to get accounted with living a more sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle. They offer free education workshops and are located right downtown in the heart of Queen West. Making living greener more accessible. Not to mention they also have a sense of community and outstanding customer service.
Here are Carley's Tips and Recipes to Reduce Waste in the Kitchen
When it comes to embarking on a “greener” and more sustainable life, the kitchen is always a great place to start. Keep in mind that its ok to start slow. Sustainability and a greener lifestyle doesn’t happen overnight and isn’t all or nothing. It’s all about exploring, learning, experimenting, committing to increasingly green practices and, above all, doing it with love and intention
Carley's top 5 tips for reducing waste in the kitchen
Use reusable shopping bags
Consider bringing your own reusable shopping bags instead.
Keep a small reusable bag in your purse or bag. Keep a bunch of reusable shopping bags in your car. Avoid produce wrapped in plastic or has styrofoam. Consider buying loose produce and bringing your own reusable produce bags instead.
Shop in bulk
More and more stores offer bulk bin shopping. There are bulk stores like Bulk Barn and many supermarkets have a bulk section. You can also get reusable bags for your balk items.
Swap saran wrap for reusable wax wraps: Wax wraps give you all the convenience of using plastic wrap without the negative impact on the environment. Wax wraps are made with cotton fabric treated with beeswax and other natural and biodegradable ingredients, and easily adhere to whatever object you’re covering.
Eat Real food and Avoid Packaging. Choose to buy food that is not over-packaged like dried fruit, trail mix and other yummy snacks at a bulk food store. Oranges, bananas, apples and hard-boiled eggs all come with their own handy packaging. Great for your body and the planet.
Pack your own metal silverware and use a reusable lunch container.Bring a fork, knife, and spoon with you from home so you don’t have to use disposable plastic silverware. When you’ve finished your lunch, rinse off any food scraps before putting the silverware back in your container. Wash the silverware at home so you can easily use it again.
Here are some of Carley's favourite lunch recipes that are delicious, cost efficient and so easy to make.

Here's a link to give you some of the historical highlights. Funnily enough, the concept comes from a woman who owned a boutique shop in London. Thanks Susie Faux for the idea that we all seem to find intriguing. She's still blogging about things like downsizing your wardrobe and shopping smart.
"According to Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be augmented with seasonal pieces"
2/ What interests you about a capsule wardrobe?
Do you crave more time and simplicity in your life? Would you like to struggle less in the morning when you're getting ready for the day? Would you like to eliminate some decision fatigue and create a "uniform" that works for you? Is it that you need to present yourself well to feel confident and professional, but don't like to shop? Is it because you'd like to reduce the wasted clothing, wasted money and learn to curb your impulse purchases to be more careful of your budget or environmental impact? Is it perhaps ....all of the above?
The first stages of my "uniform" came from living out of a suitcase for work for 20+ years. I would have a car full of samples when I was a rep and could only sneak in a small bag for my own stuff. No one cared what I was wearing as long as I was clean and tidy, but if I didn't bring the samples, I didn't make the sale. And when you're a self-employed, commissioned sales rep, you learn pretty fast that you need to make the sale.
Skip forward to me arriving at my first international sales conference wearing a black tank top, a pair of shorts and sneakers. They were cute sneakers, but still.....as the evening event started and I realized that the 30+ degrees of summer that I had left was met with very cool desert evenings and my sweater was in my luggage and guess where my luggage was? You got it! I learned a valuable lesson that night as I wore a borrowed sweatshirt, shorts and sneakers to a cocktail party, that I needed to arrive prepared and I needed to be organized enough to jump off a plane and go straight into meetings and look and feel good even if my luggage didn't arrive at the same time. After traveling almost 300 days of the year one year, I realized that I only wore what was in my bag, washed it and packed it again and it was easy and I actually kind of liked it ....I realized that simplicity was actually something I really enjoyed. I also have always liked classic, timeless style and good quality well made clothing and when you have well chosen clothing that is comfortable and versatile, you really can go anywhere in them.
So what's your reason? It's good to have a think about this so that it can inform your personalized minimalist wardrobe.
3/Is a Capsule Wardrobe One Size Fits All?
Here's one that popped up when I googled Capsule Wardrobe and here's a link to see how they describe exactly which styles we all NEED. Now here's where I differ from this. I think it's difficult to have the same pieces work for everyone and I prefer to riff on the concept and help people to develop what works for them.
You get to a stage of your life where you don't want to wear exactly the same things as everyone else. What sounds like an amazing uniform to me would be boring to someone else so it's hard to say how many pieces makes the perfect combination. My recommendation is to assess where you are, what about this appeals to you and then decide what you have in your current wardrobe that works well.
If you would like to book an appointment to get some help to get started, we offer personalized shopping appointments If you think you can do this on your own, here are my top three tips when choosing new clothing:
1/ Do you love it?
2/ Can you wear it for at least three seasons by layering it?
3/ Can you wear it at least three different ways or make three distinct outfits with it?
We're working on a wardrobe checklist for you, to help you with the in between seasons to assess what you have. But here's an idea from Spring with styles that we thought might fit the requirements. Maybe instead of adding more "summer" clothing, you could think about adding something to your wardrobe that could work well now and into the fall. One of our all time favourite suggestions is this basic bamboo layering tank, but we're sharing more of our easy style below for some outfit inspiration.
Yara dress Anne Circle Blazer Emily Blazer
Tencel/Linen Trousers Striped Tank
Tencel Dress Pencil Skirt Tencel Blouse

How would you define your lifestyle?
Healthy, happy and calm. Most days. I do run three business and sometimes feel pulled in all directions, but everything I do, I love and am passionate about, so I feel deeply grateful. I’m an actor, working in film, TV, voice, and theatre, which takes up most of my time, and I also write and produce my own projects. I teach a bit of yoga and meditation in offices and homes, which keeps me balanced and grateful. My latest project is renovating and designing a boutique vacation rental property, The Ferg in Prince Edward County, which has led to some other home design projects.
Is spending time in nature important to you? Tell us why!
Indeed. I need my Vitamin G fix. In summer, I try to get on a backcountry canoe or kayak trip. I’m by the lake most days with my rescue pup, Esther or at the beach in the County. I love to have my hands in the earth on my terrace in Toronto or in my garden at The Ferg, where I lose hours. In winter, I cross country ski and try to get to Wyoming as often as possible to see my sisters and nephews, and get into the big mountains for some proper backcountry skiing. My sisters are wilderness guides, so it’s in my blood to be outside. I grew up in the country and was on canoe trips with my parents as soon as I could carry my own little backpack. It’s a true privilege to feel comfortable in nature from such a young age, and it continues to be where I am happiest.
On a scale between 1-10, how ‘Green’ would you say you are?
I would say I’m about a high 7, low 8. I try to do my best, but we all have blind spots. I drive a hybrid car, I bike in summer, I rarely waste food and use almost all glass to store the food I cook, I bring my own shopping bags and drink containers, all my beauty products are green, I insist on eco-cleaning supplies and recycled paper products at The Ferg and I grow my own organic veggies there. My blind spot was fashion. I used to buy fast fashion, on impulse, often for auditions. I woke up to that numbing habit, and I decided for 2019 to only buy sustainable clothing, local eco designers, vintage or to go to clothing swaps.
What excites you about choosing a sustainable lifestyle?
It’s been a fun adventure to source all my clothes in a mindful way, made even more fun by collaborating with Logan & Finley on a photo shoot! I enjoy the challenge of being eco-conscious. It fits into my mindfulness practice, and when I wake up from a daydream while brushing my teeth and remember to turn off the tap, I know I’m present. When I source my food from farmers’ markets, I am present and alive, meeting the farmer, having an interaction. As someone enthralled by nature, I want to help preserve it for the next generation.
Was there an ‘aha’ moment you recall where you realized you wanted to put more effort towards sustainable living?
Going into 2019, I had downsized and “Marie Kondo’d” my new home. I realized one of the ways that I lean into the future, robbing myself of the joy available in the present moment, is a constant need to consume. I’m fashion-obsessed, I look around me at what inspires me, what people are wearing, and then I covet it. This was robbing me of joy. I decided to lay off that hunger for new stuff, and see what emerged. I feel calmer, and I am finding the cutest outfits at the back of my closet that I hadn’t worn in a while.
If you were to give advice to others about embarking on a ‘greener’ life and style, where/how would you tell them to start?
In the kitchen. Meal planning, bulk cooking, buying in bulk at health food stores, buying local and organic whenever possible, eliminating plastic in cooking and storage. It’s so easy to do this now. I started this practice in high school, where portable glass containers for food didn’t exist. If you think back a generation or two, we’ve only embraced convenience at the expense of the earth, since the post war years. It makes economic, health and environmental sense to become more mindful in the kitchen.
What are you passionate about? Where do you find inspiration?
In community, in culture, film, music, design, travel, fashion, physical movement and literature. I’m constantly reading.
How did you hear about Logan and Finley?
From my dear friend Ingrid Doucet of Clementine Fields, who got me hooked on green beauty.
What’s your most treasured item from Logan and Finley? Why?
I have an indigo-dyed cotton summer wrap dress. I wore it to a very special table read for a new television project, which I can’t wait to talk about, but for now it’s top secret. I sat at a table full of my acting heroes, all women. I felt confident and excited, a part of this new wave of female-led projects. I will treasure that dress.
What place do you think Logan and Finley has in helping Torontonians live a greener life and style?
Logan & Finley, smack dab in the fashion district of Queen Street West, is letting Torontonians know there is an alternative to fast fashion. The care that Julie takes in finding the right look for a customer is impressive. She’s got a great eye, and knows how to fit and style you expertly.
]]>"Single-use, a term referring to products – often made of plastic –that are made to be used once and thrown away, has been named Collins Dictionary’s word of the year for 2018."
I love how many of you are excited to share articles like this with me and I am really happy to see how many of you are engaged with this topic and working to make positive change in your everyday life. I personally think that we can make a difference by setting a really great example to those around us with actions we take everyday.
People often ask me questions about how to get started and I usually say to take one step at a time and build habits in a positive and sustainable way. It doesn't need to be a crash diet, but more a "what can I do today?" Once one habit forms, it's easy to add another and I believe that we should be always shooting a for progress over perfection. A quote from someone I follow online really resonates with me and maybe it will with you too. Find people that inspire you and use their tips to help you get started if this works for you. I included the link to the Plastic Free July page and here's how the Zero Waste Chef is approaching this annual challenge. And this picture/caption below is from Zero Waste Chef.
So why does it feel so daunting? Why does it feel hard to know where to start? Here's an interview I did with Mindful Collective about Low Waste Living. Follow the link above if you want to read the whole interview, but here's an excerpt:
Q: How do you suggest "beginners" to lower waste living get started and begin to make more conscious choices?
A: There are lots of ways to do this, but I encourage people to find ways that suit them and where they replace one habit with another and then keep adding – so that it’s sustainable. It’s not really about depriving yourself, but finding things you do everyday and replacing with a more sustainable option. If you go for coffee – use a mug from home, a mason jar or buy yourself a reusable coffee cup that suits your style and don’t get coffee unless you have your cup with you. Use one of the many options for reusable food wrap/storage – and if you use something great like Abeego, it actually keeps your food fresher longer too, so it’s a win win since you waste less food too. Think about things you use everyday and when you’re finished a package of something – like the cotton rounds, replace with a beautiful, super soft organic cotton/hemp one that you can put into the wash and continue to reuse vs disposing each day.
Follow along on our social feeds as we are sharing ways to reduce waste in the bathroom, the kitchen, with grocery shopping and with everyday activities, and we created a Reusable Grocery Starter Kit here for reducing single use plastic when grocery shopping. Have a look at our Less Waste Solutions Collection for more ideas or come and see us at the shop....you know we like to share our ideas and solutions with you.

In this throwback shot she is wearing one of our other favourite recommendations for expecting and new moms the PAI top from FIG...pictured with Irina and Alli in 2016
You know we love a good personalized capsule...but what better time to have a minimalist wardrobe then during pregnancy! Comfortable, soft and stretchy natural fibres make great clothing for the expanding bump and they keep their shape and are easy to launder, so they can continue to be worn postpartum too. We did a quick photoshoot with Erica and then asked her expert opinion on a few things. Here's our interview:
Pictured here is the "starter kit" we would recommend. Bamboo tank, leggings and this super versatile Poncho. Some even love this for breastfeeding too. we know there are likely some pregnancy specific pieces needed, but some women don't love having to shift from natural fibres for maternity.
Q/ Do you think there's a connection between natural fibres in our clothing and our health?
A/ Absolutely! We detox heavily through the pores of our skin and can only do so effectively if we’re wearing breathable clothing fibres. Natural materials like cotton, hemp, wool, linen, hemp, cashmere, or silk allow for this process to happen and have additional health benefits as well. Linen for example, contains natural anti-bacterial properties and can help to combat inflammatory skin conditions, prevent fungal diseases, while also being highly absorbent to perspiration instead of trapping it like a synthetic fabric. Even more, synthetic fabrics not only hinder detoxification but unfortunately ADD more toxins into the mix! Polyester, acrylic, rayon, acetate, nylon, and anything static or stain resistant are highly chemically processed, some of which contain cancer-causing chemicals like polycrylonitriles that can be absorbed through your skin simply by wearing these materials. Not to mention their terrible impact on the environment.
Erica is wearing a bamboo wrap dress and bamboo blazer.....both are machine washable and can be worn many different ways
Q/ We find that some people start to pay attention more to what they’re bringing into their homes once they have a family. Are there any things you think are especially important to consider when planning to make your home ready or things everyone could be doing to lessen their toxins?
A/ Oh gosh yes! It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately myself :) In the kitchen I’ve eliminated my teflon-coated cookware, aluminum as well as any plastics and replaced them with stainless steel, ceramic, cast iron, and glass for storage containers. All my cleaning products are eco-friendly and contain zero fragrance (essential oils only!). I’ve gotten rid of my plastic wrap and use your beeswax covers instead - LOVE those. I don’t use any synthetic air fresheners, I have wool dryer balls to replace dryer sheets, and lately I’ve been using the Sapadilla laundry detergent and am very happy with it. I’ve even started making my own cleaning solution for the floor and counter tops, which I have to say has been an excellent replacement to anything harsh I’ve used in the past. I use beeswax or hemp candles instead of lead - what a difference. It’s incredible how many things can contribute to toxins in your home and I feel so much better knowing that I’ve swapped everything I can for a cleaner and more sustainable replacement.
If you're interested in some replacements for single-use items, check out our Less Waste Solutions online or throughout the shop.

Here's our interview with her:
What inspired you to open a business that was eco-friendly?
I was dealing with health issues and we adopted a baby. I was becoming obsessed about toxins and chemicals in our home and I was finding it difficult to find skincare that was clean and beautiful, so my husband and I decided to open our own boutique. Honestly , we were quite naive and we didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into. I just knew I wanted to provide people options for natural products in a way that felt authentic and calming and we strive to make our customers experience joyful.
What things do you do everyday to try and reduce your impact on the environment?
I carry reusable bags and cutlery on me at all times. I also keep glass water bottles and mugs in my purse. If I am going to get take out or going to the market I will bring my own containers and cloth bags. I try to buy produce with no packaging. I’m not perfect but I am trying really hard to buy consciously and low waste. It’s not always convenient , but neither are floods and heat waves and animals dying off. If we all could do our best the earth would be so much better off. I walk down the street and see so many people drinking out of disposable cups. I don’t get it, it’s such an easy fix.. Bring your own mug!! As Margaret Atwood says, ‘we are pooping plastic’. It’s not good.
If you're interested to find some of your own reusable options, we have a selection here in our Less Waste Solutions Collection.
What do you like about shopping at Logan & Finley - any favourite finds?
I love that Julie keeps bringing me pieces to try on until I find what I am looking for. I love that the clothes she carries are made consciously and sustainably. I just picked up a few tops that I adore, they are perfect for spring and super cute!
And now there are refillable products where you can buy detergents/soaps/natural cleaners and then go back to Logan & Finley to refill the empty containers . I find that incredibly satisfying and fun! She also carries great options for gifts, especially for people who are difficult to buy for.
Dish Soap in a refillable glass container, plastic-free sponge, pot scrubber and dish brush all available online or in the shop and you're welcome to bring your own containers for our refillable options as well.
What are some of your favourite or best selling products that you'd like people to check out this spring?
I love the multi purpose coloured balms we carry from Olio E Osso. They are lovely on lips and cheeks and leave your skin luminous looking with a sheer flush of colour. We also do incredibly well with Raw Elements Eco Formula for Face and Body, it is 30 SPF and is available in a plastic free tin! Beuti Skincare’s Beauty Sleep Elixir is a wonderful serum that has anti-inflammatory properties and leaves the skin glowing . Kate Middleton uses it and it has gotten incredible press.
There's a link to Clementine Fields above if you want to check out any of Ingrid's Picks for Spring. And if you want some help with your personal style or are interested in some Less Waste Solutions, we are here to help!

This is the look that I am looking for when you're trying on clothing! Does it feel good? Do you like how it looks? Are you going to be able to find lots of ways to wear it? And that's after it fits all of your criteria. I love doing wardrobe consultations with people and am thrilled that Karen not only enjoyed hers, but she was kind enough to share her thoughts so that you can see how it all worked out. See Karen's story:
"Last year I lost some weight and needed to rebuild my wardrobe for a new job. Exciting, right!? Yes, everything minus the shopping part. Some of my biggest fears are heights, public speaking, pushy sales people, and buyer's remorse.
Around the same time, I started following a couple bloggers who wrote about style, sustainability, and responsible fashion. I started looking for a stylist in Toronto with a similar values and came across a styling workshop at Logan & Finley. I was hesitant ("it's at a store, they're just going to up-sell me on everything!") but ultimately I was drawn to the event because it included a clothing swap and a donation to the not-for-profit 'Dress for Success'.
At the workshop, Julie suggested that we should all delete our Pinterest fashion boards and focus only on things we felt good in. I was hooked. (* See note below)
Ok moment of truth: I didn't delete my board but I did cut it down about 90% after following Julie's advice and observing what I liked about the outfits I already owned. These are some words that define my style: soft, natural, elegant but not prim, timeless, and minimal but with a fun or unexpected twist. My fashion icon is pretty much any French woman.
Here we are making her favourite navy blazer work with some of her new pieces including this "signature' scarf - in my opinion, owning a bunch of scarves you never wear doesn't help, but having a couple of go to scarves that literally go with everything, is a much easier way to accessorize. This is the scarf Karen chose, with a blouse she chose and the blazer she already had in her closet. The second picture we are working with a blouse she bought at the consultation, with a new sweater and the trusty scarf looks great with this outfit too!
After that exercise, I emailed Julie about a private styling consult. I liked that she sent me a questionnaire about my style (and that I was now able to fill it out quickly).
Julie was mindful of my goals (keeping my closet small), restrictions (no black pieces), and my current wardrobe. I bought 10 pieces which seems light given I was starting a new job in tech consulting and need to be ready to go from casual to professional and back on any given day. Each piece is versatile and works with several others that I already had. I've never found so many items I loved at one store but Julie made it easy. She was honest when something didn't work, worked with my restrictions, but also got me out of my comfort zone (and even convinced me to try on a skirt that I can dress up or down for an artsy event)!
Here she is in said skirt....at the AGO in Toronto. I love this outfit on her - it's a Made in Canada sweater vest by the brand Erdaine, a hemp and organic cotton top from Prana and a bamboo skirt from Miik. All all natural and sustainable fibres and doesn't she look beautiful?
The consult has helped me in the following ways:
]]>Oops, we broke the rules, it's black. But it looked so great on, and of course we have to be sure she could wear it at least three different ways, for different occasions. It's a new dress in the shop, that we don't have in our online shop yet, but check it out next time you're in.* I am not anti-Pinterest by any means, and should likely be more careful when giving advice since I know a lot of stylists recommend it and it works so well for so many. But I see a lot of people who don't actually know what to do once they have the boards done up and I am here to help those people.....let's put the ideas into action. Having a plan, as Karen clearly did is important and I love helping interpret and deliver a personalized version of this to each of the people with whom I do consultations. Here's the link if you're interested to learn more about our Wardrobe Consultations.
This is Michelle in one of her outfits from last spring/summer and the necklace she is talking about below
Sparkle girl! And if you don’t feel a sparkle, fake it. I have never been the type of person to buy accessories: never owned a watch, never wore earrings, and my jewelry box is tucked into the back of my storage unit. With a little nudge from Julie (who is always sparkling!) I took home a long Liel and Lentz silver necklace, black gemstone earrings, a staple cork handbag, and a watercolour scarf. These items have totally up’d my love for getting dressed. Suddenly, I toss on a necklace and I’m “together”. And on days when I’m feeling like nothing but my old t-shirt will do, a pair of earrings really jazzes up plain cotton. I have expanded my accessory collection minimally since last spring, wear one or two pieces daily, and walk out of the house with a little more sparkle in my step!
Sometimes it's worth trying...could you wear your jean jacket over a tunic? Can you wear a pattern with stripes? This can come down to personal style, but we love how Michelle wears a scarf!
We like showing you a few different ways to wear your items. Sometimes in the process, we realize one is a better fit for someone's style, but it's nice to be able to have versatility in your wardrobe so you get the most wear from your favourite clothing.
It's funny to me the way people describe what I do, but I am helpful, sometimes downright bossy when it comes to sorting out the right choices, but I like it when it all makes sense to you and you leave with just the right things for you. No one thing works for all.
These were my big takeaways from last spring and since then I’ve worn all my pieces throughout the seasons, except for two items that feel spring and summer exclusive to me. Now that I have the basics in my closet, I add pieces in seasonally that spark joy (shout-out to Marie Kondo!). Since I like getting dressed now that clothes fit AND I feel like I’m fully expressing my gorgeous self, I look at the store with an eye for special items that compliment me and make me feel fantastic. This includes a pair of earrings that literally sparkle and I wear almost every day!
Thanks Michelle, for coming back and showing us all the ways you're enjoying your outfits and letting us help you create more. You definitely sparkle! And hope if you're reading this that you know it takes some time and some work to find the style that works for you, but we're here to help and I do take appointments if anyone is interested!
The Lifecycle of 6 Fabrics
When it comes to environmental action, one of the biggest ways in which we can individually have a positive impact is by choosing fabrics that are earth-friendly. Clothing production and micro-fibres that are released when we wash our clothes are two extremely polluting activities, seriously causing damage to the environment and our waterways. We can circumvent some of these effects by choosing fabrics that have less of an effect on the earth when in production, fabrics that are well-made and have a long life, and fabrics that are easily biodegradable for when they are no longer needed. I’ve outlined 6 fabrics below that rank from most earth-friendly to least, and the impact they have in production, during their lifetime, and in the afterlife.
1. Hemp
Hemp is the most versatile plant on the earth, and serves many uses. As a fabric, it’s the top choice for sustainability.
Hemp doesn’t require much water to grow, and it can produce two to three times more fibre per acre than cotton can. It also replenishes the soil as it is growing, rather than taking nutrients away, like most plants do. Hemp is breathable, soft, warm, moisture-wicking, and anti-bacterial. Like linen, hemp is super durable and becomes softer with use. Because it is a wholly natural fibre (when unblended), washing hemp clothing in your machine isn’t cause for concern, as the microfibres that filter into the water supply will easily breakdown with time.
Hemp is biodegradable at the end of its lifetime, meaning you can chuck it in the backyard and use it as garden mulch. From a sustainability perspective, hemp is definitely the best fabric to go with.
Genevieve above is wearing a linen scarf, and we carry a lot of linen in the spring and summer. She's also wearing two layers of closed loop bamboo -the Lea tank and the Emily blazer, both styles we sell year-round as recommended components of a great built to last wardrobe.
A natural fibre made from the bamboo plant, bamboo is quickly rising in the ranks of earth-friendly fabric, but it’s not * always as clean as we think. ( see note below)
Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, making it an amazing resource. It requires very little water and no fertilizers or pesticides to grow. Despite this, the process of turning bamboo into fabric is actually very chemically-intensive, in order to get it into the soft fabric we all love. Bamboo fibre production produces quite a bit of waste (50% of hazardous waste from production cannot be recaptured and goes into the environment). Also, because so much of the bamboo we use comes from China, it is hard to regulate pesticide use (so many growers do use it to maximize their outputs, but don’t always declare it), so the bamboo waters can be murky and not always as clear as we may think.
Bamboo is naturally highly sweat absorbent, pulling moisture from the skin for evaporation in what is called moisture-wicking. Claims that it is naturally antibacterial or UV resistance are unclear, as the process of making it into a fibre seems to disqualify this. The fabric itself is incredibly soft and feels great on the skin.
Because of its chemically-intensive production, bamboo isn’t quite as sustainable as we think, and while it may biodegrade, it is considered a fabric falling between naturals and synthetics. It would need to be properly recycled in a facility, rather than simply in your compost, and micro-fibres are a cause for concern with bamboo.
* "Not all bamboo is the same - at Logan & Finley we sell closed loop bamboo and other certified fabrics which means the fabrics are processed with very little waste and the bamboo is sourced in a sustainable way. Miik is an example of a brand designed to last for a very long time and very carefully made with sustainable fibres including bamboo and are the favourites of a lot of your wardrobes for good reason & I included a link to their fabrics & sustainability pages." JS
Note: A similar fabric is on the rise, called lyocell, which is also known by the brand name TENCEL ®. This fabric uses a closed-loop process to recapture and reuse 99% of the chemical solution. It is often made from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees, making it an increasingly popular green fabric option. ( and one that we carry a lot of at Logan & Finley)
4. Cotton
Cotton is a well-known, high in demand fabric, that makes up a quarter of all fabric used in clothing and textiles.
In a process that is quite unsustainable, cotton uses a tremendous amount of water (700 gallons for a t-shirt, which is the same amount a person drinks in 2.5 years), pesticides (35% of the world’s insecticides and pesticides), and arable land. Organic cotton is definitely the better option, but often requires more land because crop yields decrease over time.
Micro-fibres are a huge issue, and with non-organic cotton, they begin to leach into our water systems and environment when we wash our clothes. Most cotton is not wholly biodegradable, if it has been treated or dyed with non-natural dyes, while organic cotton would eventually biodegrade.
Organic Cotton/Bamboo blend top
Wool is a historical favourite, but not for everyone, especially vegans. It is however, one of the most environmentally-friendly (in terms of the actual fabric) out there, but the reason we’ve listed it as fifth is due to its carbon footprint. The biggest issue with wool comes from the methane gas emissions caused by gassy sheep. 50% of wool’s carbon footprint comes from the sheep themselves, but on the flip side, sheep are usually raised on non-arable land, requiring less resources than some plant-based options.
In terms of the fabric itself, wool is tough, wrinkle-resistant, resilient, and can absorb a ton of moisture before feeling damp. It is warm and can replace many polyester fleeces out there, helping reduce the amount of micro-fibre shedding that occurs. When wool micro-fibres are released into the world, they biodegrade, naturally.
This outfit - Made in Canada merino wool sweater with a linen scarf and layers of bamboo, with an eco-friendly cork purse and tights that are made in a solar powered zero-waste factory from recycled yarns....we work hard to bring you beautiful sustainable options like these.
Polyester is the least sustainable option yet the one that is currently dominating the clothing industry (60% of clothing has polyester in it). The fabric is stretchy, durable, comfortable and easy to take care of however it is a plastic product, manufactured from crude oil. Recycled polyester is better, as it reduces the amount of oil being used (9.5 billion litres of oil yearly for virgin polyester production) and reduces waste, but eventually will also have the same environmental repercussions as new polyester when it comes time for disposal.
Polyester releases a ton of micro-fibres into the water every time it is washed, and there is no way this fabric breaks down or biodegrades easily, as it takes up to 200 years to decompose. Our fish (and eventually us, if you eat meat) consume these micro-fibres, which is dangerous to the health of marine life, ourselves, and the ocean/world’s waterways.
So, while this all may seem daunting, the best practice to reduce your footprint and help the environment is to choose organic and natural fabrics wherever possible. Second-hand shopping, clothing swaps and outfit rental programs help reduce the amount of new products being made. Also, using a Guppy Bag or a Cora Ball when washing your clothes works well to ensure micro-fibres aren’t being released into the water. And as always, monitor your consumption and only buy something if you truly need it.
Thanks Arti for helping us explain these fabrics. We do prioritize sustainability when we are carefully selecting product for Logan & Finley and since I know a lot of you will ask - I already have a few requests out to get the Guppy Bag for your synthetics, but hadn't carried it since we don't really sell much synthetic at the shop. Also, if you'd like to learn more about choosing the right styles for you so you can build a long lasting wardrobe, we have an Wardrobe Event coming up, that you might like to attend!

As you’re sifting through your hangers and drawers, ask yourself some questions. How long have you had that sweater that you love, but never wear because it’s pilled? Are you getting rid of jeans that fit perfectly well, but are frayed at the bottom because they’re a bit too long? Did you get a stain on your favourite cotton tee that won’t go away?
There are several approaches to building a sustainable wardrobe that you love. It should have clothes that make you feel great and work together so well you don’t have to think about what you’re going to wear. But once you have your ideal pieces, how do you make sure you can keep them in your closet longer?
Taking better care of your clothes doesn’t have to be hard, and it will reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing and ultimately landfilling.
A lot of what we’ve been told about cleaning our clothes is actually ruining them faster, making us buy more. In this article, I’m going to bust some myths and share some tips to help you get more wear out of the clothes you already have.
Buy Better
By now we’re well aware of the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion. Our sense of what “affordable” is for clothing has become incredibly warped. Clothing that is cheap, is also cheaply made. Which means you’ll be forced to replace it more frequently. What’s better for your bottom line? A $6 T-shirt that lasts one year or that $20 T-shirt that lasts 5 years or more?
Invest in quality, made-to-last staples that will carry you through a range of seasons and that work well together. You can then fill in the gaps or look for more seasonal/on-trend items from thrift stores because these are not likely to last as long anyways.
And don’t forget your local tailor. If something doesn’t quite fit, like pant legs that are too long, get it tailored right away. This will reduce wear and tear and increase the life of the piece.
Pictured here is an entire outfit that's Made in Canada, Built to Last and some of our favourite staples - black blazer, layering tank, dark wash denim jeans
Washing Properly
Warmer water used to be required, back when washing machines and laundry soaps weren’t as effective. But now, we have better options and hot water isn’t needed. It can cause shrinking, fading, and faster breakdown of fibers.
If you can wash with cold water and are happy with the results, stick with that (your energy bill will be lower too). Cold water washing in the winter may be too cold for your laundry soap or detergent to work properly. If you’re finding residue remains on your clothes, try a warm water rinse as a next step. Just make sure you’re washing similar colours together to avoid accidental colour transfer.
Failing that, you may need to switch laundry soaps, do a tub clean of your washer, and/or switch to warm water washes. My favourite laundry soap is a homemade version that I use in my HE machine, using cold water. A great store-bought option is Eco-Max.
You should also avoid using fabric softeners, as they coat the fabric in toxic chemicals that might make them feel softer, but aren’t good for you, the water, or your clothes. Keep reading for alternatives in the next section.
Always check the label for recommended care and wash temperatures – but know that anything can be washed in cold water. And remember – you don’t have to wash your clothes every time you wear them! I will wear jeans maybe 10 times before putting them in the wash (obviously if I’ve managed to keep them from being visibly dirty).
Reduce Dryer Damage
Heat drying can quickly ruin any piece of clothing. The heat and added tumbling wears down fabrics, sets stains, and can shrink certain materials. Hang drying your clothes will help prolong the life of them significantly. Get a good set-up for hanging clothes or laying them flat if directed on the label, and you’ll save a tonne of energy too.
When you do use the dryer, skip the dryer sheets. Like fabric softeners, they are filled with toxic chemicals that contribute to poor indoor air quality and aren’t good long-term for the fabrics. If you need to control static, you can use wool dryer balls instead. Also, look at decrease drying time because the longer your clothes are in the dryer, especially if they’re dry, the more static will be produced.
Treat Stains Early
The earlier you treat stains, the easier they will come out. This is especially true if you’re using a natural laundry soap. Buncha Farmers is a great natural option that can remove a range of stains. If you’re not at home when the stain happens, get it on as soon as you can, and let it sit until you’re able to wash it fully.
The best thing you can do for stains is to avoid heat. Putting a stained piece of clothing in hot water or the dryer can actually set the stain, making it next to impossible to get out. So keep it to cold water wash and hang drying – at least until the stain is out.
Don’t let your sustainable fashion habits end at the checkout! Extend the life of your clothes, and you’ll be reducing what you send to landfill, use less raw materials, and lower your overall environmental impact.

We are happy to feature Erika in our The Life & Style of Interesting People series and excited to welcome her to the shop for a Brunch & Learn on Sunday April 7th to celebrate the launch of her book Sound Mind. I've shared more about the book below, but let's get to know Erika first! Erika is a customer who lives close to the shop and is a professional cellist, now author, artist and educator and you can follow her here on Instagram @celloerika or her website here. And here's how she answered our questions:
Q/ How would you define your lifestyle?
A/ I’d define my lifestyle as customized to achieve sustainability: a lifestyle that allows me to engage in my work and creative activities, while prioritizing my mental health and wellbeing. A balance of creative/artistic, minimalist, and structure with scheduled freedom. Hard-working, but with planned breaks to avoid hecticness and burning out. Sleep, nutrition, and self-care are priority #1, and my best life is born from that foundation, which is very different from how I approached my lifestyle before my bipolar diagnosis.
Q/ Is spending time in nature important to you? Tell us why!
A/ Absolutely! Spending time in nature helps me refresh and recharge, and grounds me in connecting with being a part of the earth, and appreciating what a glorious, wide world there is out there. Being in nature is a great place to practice mindfulness meditation, and I especially love mountains, lakes, and oceans. I also love to marvel at the intricacies of complex ecosystems, exquisite plants and creatures, and thinking about how the natural world has evolved from the formation of the planet, to billions of years of evolution. It always blows my mind, and makes me feel insignificant in the best possible way.
Q/ On a scale between 1-10, how ‘Green’ would you say you are?
A/ I’d give myself solid 8.5. My home isn’t any larger than my spouse and I need (a 1 bedroom apartment). We have never owned a car. We use safe, green, versatile products like Dr. Bronner’s castile soap in reused foam dispensers for hand/face/body wash and general cleaning. I am really “laundry frugal” and try to get as many wears as possible out of my shirts and pants before I wash them.
We are fervent re-users and recyclers, and always bring our own cloth shopping bags (I despise plastic)! We also cook at home, compost, keep a backyard vegetable garden in the summer, and shop at the bulk food store. If we can make something instead of purchase it, we do. For example, I use cut up t-shirts for reusable “Kleenex”, and household rags, make our deodorant from scratch, and brew my own kombucha.
Any purchases we make are rare and extremely conscious. We try to obtain items second-hand first, and choose items for quality, longevity, and sourced locally if possible.
And for our ultimate green effort, we will likely have either zero children, or only one child. Our planet is maxed out!
Q/ What excites you about choosing a sustainable lifestyle?
A/ The seemingly small choices we make in day-to-day living really add up, and I get excited about the impact that better choices have on our carbon footprint, and also on our finances as we save for an uncertain future. I loathe waste and love efficiency of every kind. Choosing a sustainable lifestyle makes me feel as though I am taking responsibility for my part by operating my life as efficiently as possible.
Q/ If you were to give advice to others about embarking on a ‘greener’ life and style, where/how would you tell them to start?
A/ I’d suggest sitting down with a pen and paper, and take stock of every facet of your lifestyle. Write down what an average day living your life looks like, and look for ways to make a different choice, cut back on consumption and conserve the resources you use. Even a few small tweaks will make a difference, and likely make a difference to your wallet, too, for added incentive. We can essentially “vote” for greener choices with the purchases you make. How many times a week do you really need to use your car? How far did that cheap T-shirt have to travel?
And for really big impact, for those considering whether to have children or more children, it's worth examining the research, and thinking hard about the environmental impact of sustainably housing and feeding more humans. I think it's a really important consideration, especially now that we are 7.7 billion strong, and projected to rise to 11.2 billion by 2100.
Q/ What are you passionate about? Where do you find inspiration?
A/ I'm a passionate educator, and I'm endlessly inspired by my students and colleagues.
Q/ How did you hear about Logan and Finley?
A/ I strolled in one day, years ago. I was exploring Queen West, coming from a gig and schlepping my cello. I was always on the lookout for gig clothes, and I was at a point in my life where I wanted to start building a minimalist, more “adult” wardrobe of quality, beautiful, versatile and easy-to-care-for pieces that would make me feel polished, professional, and comfortable. I was also embracing minimalism to improve my mental wellness, which I write about in Sound Mind. I needed simplicity.
I remember Julie insisting that I try on a super comfortable and tailored Miik Emily blazer, which was the perfect first piece to get me started. I have since found many thrilling pieces, which make up a sizeable percentage of my professional wardrobe.
Q/ What’s your most treasured item from Logan and Finley? Why?
A/ I adore all of my Miik pieces, and love that they are made in Canada, but I especially enjoy the versatility of my reversible tunic-length Miik tanks, (one black, one blue!) They dress up beautifully with a blazer for concerts, or are also awesome casual pieces. I layer them under my T-shirt to create a little skirt that covers my bottom when I wear leggings, and I love that look for when I’m teaching or rehearsing at home. Oh, and I’ve had them for years, and they still look and feel brand-new. Zero wear and pilling!
Here's an excerpt from the publisher about Sound Mind
"Erika Nielsen knew that her real language was music—her truest voice, the cello—by the time she was three years old. She knew she would become a professional musician by the eighth grade. But she could never understand why sometimes she felt as if she was floating on sparkling clouds, enchanted by her own brilliance, while at other times she huddled in a dark, wretched place, sobbing and overcome with her inadequacy. At age 27, she finally found out: she was mentally ill. In this frank and courageous memoir, Erika confronts the shock of her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and chronicles how, step by step, day by day, she walked herself to a place of stability and health. Containing wellness tips and coping strategies to live creatively, productively, and healthily with a mental illness, Sound Mind is a story of hope, healing, and transformation that reminds us that it is not only possible to function with a mental illness, it is possible to thrive. By promoting education, awareness and de-stigmatization of mental illness, Sound Mind helps write a new narrative around mental health and wellness." You can pre-order her book or you can buy one at the brunch and we will be giving away a personalized signed copy as well. Save the Date - Sunday April 7th -event to be posted soon. Erika will be bringing her cello with her as well as sharing her story with us.
